E-flurrying. An invitation-to-interview has come in for a documentary on Island Records. From the reply…
interviews are no longer part of my job description. if they were, i doubt that my voice or input would find a welcome place in your documentary. the inside history of the industry has elements that rarely attract attention: its basis in exploitation, for example. island was in many ways an excellent label; although when it was sold in the late 1980s, how much of the money went to the artists for their copyright interests? well, none - because they had no copyright interest in their own work. but then, this was pretty well standard.
what was the significance of the move from basing street to st. john's square in hammersmith? what was the key element in that building which indicated the company was going off course? what was the relationship with EG Records in the mid-1970s? well, that's over to you to discover!
you will probably be speaking to david betteridge, and david enthoven & tim clark of ie management. theirs is a different perspective to mine, and all people i respect.
